New Hampshire Laws and Requirements for Homeschool

In New Hampshire, homeschooling is a legally recognized educational option, governed by specific statutes and regulations.

Compulsory Attendance Age:  Children between the ages of 6 and 18 are subject to compulsory education laws in New Hampshire.

Notification Requirements: Parents intending to homeschool must submit a written notification of their intent to homeschool to a participating agency (the local school district superintendent, a private school principal, or the Commissioner of Education) within five business days of commencing the home education program.

Curriculum Requirements: The home education program must include instruction in the following required subjects:

  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Language Arts
  • Social Studies
  • Health Education
  • Physical Education
  • Art and Music Education

Parents have the flexibility to choose or develop curricula that best meet their child's educational needs, as long as these subjects are covered.

Teacher Qualifications: New Hampshire does not require homeschooling parents to possess specific qualifications or teaching certificates.

Assessment Requirements: An annual educational evaluation is required to ensure the child is making progress commensurate with their age and abilities. This can be fulfilled through one of the following methods:

  • A standardized achievement test administered by a qualified individual.
  • A written evaluation by a certified teacher or a current nonpublic school teacher.
  • A mutually agreed upon evaluation method between the parent and the participating agency.

The results of the evaluation are to be kept by the parents and are not required to be submitted to any state agency unless requested.

Record-Keeping: While New Hampshire law does not mandate specific record-keeping, it is advisable for parents to maintain a portfolio of the child's work, records of evaluations, and other pertinent educational documentation. This practice can be beneficial, especially if the child transitions back to public or private school or pursues higher education.
